Desk Rant and 52 Recipe Challenge

Sunday was a lost day for me, I’m sorry to say. I think the last two weeks are beginning to catch up. On Sunday morning I woke up far too early, and headed over to the new apartment. Luckily the fiancé was already up and moving. We ate breakfast, went to church, and then went desk shopping.

This will tell you everything you need to know about the two of us. My desk, already in the apartment, is one that I used to admire every summer when we went to Ohio to visit my grandparents. It was Grandma’s desk. I have no idea how much she ever really used it. The room wasn’t used except when grandkids came over. The room always smelled like her homemade potpourii and old books. I still love the smell of old books.

The desk in my youth was enormous. It’s still tall – just a foot shy of ceiling height – because the top of the desk is a bookcase, but it isn’t quite as intimidating as it used to be. The bottom half has drawers on both sides and a middle drawer. Though I might wish the actual desk space to be a bit bigger, it’s perfect.

If you haven’t figured it out yet, I’m a pack rat. You never know when you might need that travel marker set you bought two years ago for a road trip and haven’t looked at again. Right? Right.

FI, on the other hand, throws away everything that he hasn’t looked at in six months. In shopping for a new desk, we went into Target and headed for the furniture. The options were limited. He only had about six to choose from. He was fine with this and starts inspecting the options.

I’m frowning at the lack of drawers. I mean, only one actually had multiple drawers. Three of them didn’t have any at all. Who uses a desk without drawers? Where do you put the pens? The papers? The random bits of flotsam you collect but aren’t sure if you need?

Apparently, people like my fiancé.

He chose a lovely, sleek looking desk with one giant drawer. At least it has one. As long as he’s happy with it, we’re good. But I still have trouble imagining how he can make it through the week without acquiring stuff to put in there. Maybe I need to watch him closer.

After we got home and he put together his desk while I connected my internet (ah, internet!), I sat down on the couch and promptly fell asleep. Nothing got unpacked.

But, to prove the day wasn’t a complete loss – I’ve started working on the porch garden!

It doesn’t look like much yet, but I’m not quite done rearranging. The back quarter of the porch is the only part that gets direct sun, so things like the tomatoes have to go there. I’m still messing around with placement and what will go back there.

I have decided, however, that I want to try something a little daunting but exciting. I’m challenging myself to come up with a new recipe every week for a year. 52 new recipes, posted here, for the year. Now, in order to keep some of my sanity, I’ve decided not to start until after the wedding in July. So I’ll begin mid – August. Most of them will be baking oriented, but there might be “regular” recipes as well. I’m probably nuts. Oh well. Knew that already.

I’d love some company if anyone wants to join in – just drop a comment and let me know.
